Description:

Ming Xiang’s language processing lab in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Chicago invites applications for an NSF-funded postdoc position. The research project will examine the effect of Question under Discussion in sentence processing, with a focus on developing methods to quantify the degree of uncertainty of QUDs in naturalistic discourse context (in English and Mandarin). The postdoc’s primary responsibilities include developing experimental and data analysis protocols, collecting, maintaining and analyzing data, conducting literature reviews, assisting with preparing reports, manuscripts, and other documents, interacting with students and the principal investigator.

The position is benefits eligible. The expected start date is July 1, 2024, or soon after. The initial appointment is one year, with the possibility to renew for an additional 12~18 months following a successful review of the performance.

Competitive applicants must have (i) a relevant PhD in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or a related field; (ii) a solid background in semantics and pragmatics or related areas (iii) a solid background in statistical and computational methods. Prior experience with developing interactive online experimental paradigms is highly desirable. Proficiency or working knowledge in Mandarin Chinese would be advantageous.

The successful candidate must have completed the Ph.D. by the start of the appointment.
